Saat ini ia menjabat sebagai Ketua Kwartir Nasional Gerakan Pramuka Indonesia dan Ketua Stikes Binawan Jakarta. Dilingkungan pemerintahan, Azrul pernah menjabat sebagai Direktur Jenderal Bina Kesehatan Masyarakat Kementerian Kesehatan RI, sedangkan di almamaternya, Universitas Indonesia, Azrul adalah Guru Besar Ilmu Kedokteran Komunitas dan pernah menjabat sebagai Dekan Fakultas Ilmu Keperawatan Universitas Indonesia.
